NSW: Police winning battle against gun violence: Carr =2
Opposition police spokesman Peter Debnam later questioned how the premier could possibly
suggest police were winning the war on gun crime.
Mr Debnam branded the premier's reassurances as worthless, pointing to comments made
by Task Force Gain Chief Superintendent Bob Inkster.
"I've been a police officer for over 37 years now, I can't think of a time when we've
had such violent crime (as) what we've been facing of recent times," Chief Supt Inkster
told radio 2UE last night.
Mr Debnam said this highlighted the "worthlessness" of Mr Carr's reassurances today.
"Time and time again he's focused on media spin instead of backing up the police across
the state, I'll go with commander Inkster who says it's the worst violent crime he's seen
in 37 years," Mr Debnam said.
Two police were shot at last night, and two men were shot at today in the western suburb
of Guildford.
"I think the issue we're not getting through is that there are so many young men out
there with guns that we're seeing shootings right across Sydney," Mr Debnam said.
"And the real problem we've got is the government's continuing to play it down instead
of admitting the depth of the problem."
